Alessandra DeLaCruz is a New York City based abstract artist who focuses on process oil painting.  The

application of each layer she works with creates a complex web; pushing and pulling background and foreground together to combine, create, combust, inviting the viewer to dive deeper into the “universes” that she creates in each work.

Graduating with a BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 2009, DeLaCruz has been featured in group exhibitions throughout New York and participates in many art collectives. In the curatorial field, Alessandra  was the Director of Exhibitions at Harmony Gallery in Stony Brook NY from 2012-13, and currently works under independent curator Ombretta Agro Andruff.  Alessandra is also the resident artist and head curator for the East African Center, a non-profit she volunteered with as a muralist and art teacher in rural Eastern Kenya in 2011.

Artist Statement:

I am constantly exploring the little secrets of oil paint.  It creates microscopic relationships with everything and anything it comes in contact with and to me that's fascinating.  I love to see the way the paint interacts with texture and how itself creates texture.  My paintings are extremely physical; paint them on the floor, in 360 degrees, constantly moving around them, lifting them, tilting them until I get the right movement.  When the paintings get more developed, each stage of movement is more difficult because they become heavier, especially the really large pieces.  I believe both the demise or the success of the visual and emotional elements of each piece relies greatly on this physicality.  Though I can never re-create some of those little discoveries and happy accidents in my paintings, its rather humbling to realize you are not ultimately in control.  Sometimes these relationships in a piece can be disastrous, but they are beautiful.  And if you're lucky, even life changing.
